CMSA Announces Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient at 16th Annual Conference in Texas

LITTLE ROCK, AR — Jeanne Boling, MSN, CRRN, CDMS, CCM, was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award during the 16th Annual Conference and Expo of the Case Management Society of America (CMSA) held in June at the Gaylord TexanTM Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas.

"We are all profoundly grateful to have had the privilege of serving with Jeanne as CMSA's Executive Director," stated CMSA's Immediate Past President, Susan Rogers, RN, BSN, CCM. "At CMSA's helm, she has always seen a world of possibility and, despite some daunting challenges, has managed to nurture an infant industry to the place of stability and maturity from which we benefit today."

After receiving her BSN from the University of Colorado and MSN from UCLA, Boling began her professional life in 1964 as a psychiatric nurse at the VA hospital in Palo Alto, Calif. She then served in various hospital director's positions in California, Michigan, and Arkansas. After settling in central Arkansas, Boling worked for Systemedic Corporation, the state's largest managed care and case management company, for over a decade. During this time, she co-founded and served as Executive Director of the Individual Case Management Association (ICMA). In 1994, Boling joined Case Management Society of America and founded its management company, Case Management, Inc. Boling successfully served as Executive Director of CMSA from 1994 to 2005, at which time Cheri Lattimer, RN, BSN, assumed the position of CMSA Executive Director, and Boling moved into the newly created position of Associate Executive Director.

"Jeanne’s involvement with the Case Management Society of America has provided the stability needed to see this association mature into one of the largest organizations dedicated solely to case/care management," Lattimer stated. "She helped blaze the way in our industry, and because of her dedication and perseverance, we have a great foundation and future to build on."

Under Boling, CMSA rapidly grew as a multidisciplinary professional association with almost 10,000 members, over 15,000 member/subscribers, approximately 70 chapters in the United States and an international outreach to CMS-UK and CMS-Australia and member countries and territories including, Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, England, Hong Kong,  Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Panama, Puerto Rico, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.

As a renowned case management expert, Boling is a sought-after national speaker, author, and consultant. She has worked on numerous care management advisory boards for insurance, managed care, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical companies throughout her career. Among those Boling currently serves are Pfizer's Case Management Adherence Guidelines Management Team, the healthFORWARDTM advisory panel, and the Council for Case Management Accountability. Boling has also served on editorial boards for such publications as The Case Manager, The Journal of Care Management, and Case Management Advisor. She has worked diligently to help develop professional accreditation and certification standards for organizations such as Utilization Review and Accreditation Commission and the Commission for Case Manager Certification. She has been active in countless professional organizations including serving as co-founder and Executive Director of the Case Management Leadership Coalition, a recently formed group of over 35 organizations with stakeholder interests in the future of case management.

Boling has also been recognized throughout her career for her professional contributions in the field of care management, including receiving CMSA's 1993 "Distinguished Case Manager of the Year" award.

"I compare it to an orchestra," Boling says of her work in the industry. "In order for a performance to succeed, it takes contributions from all sections of the orchestra — there is no single musician. Our members, board, and staff have performed as the musicians over the years. I am simply one who has helped to give direction — and together, each playing our part, we have created a beautiful symphony."

Only two other case management professionals share the Lifetime Achievement Award honor with Boling. Tom Strickland also of Little Rock, Ark., President of Systemedic Corporation, received the award in 2004, and case management pioneer, Mary Gambosh, RN, CCM, of Charlotte, N.C., was the award recipient in 2005.

Boling lives in Little Rock, Ark., with her husband of 39 years, Charlie, and pet Boston terrier, Champ. They have three sons, Chad, Kent, and John Mark.
