WINNER OF THE 2022 AWARD OF EXCELLENCE FOR PUBLIC POLICY & ADVOCACY: CMSA DETROIT

July 21, 2022

In 2021, CMSA Detroit focused on a vital issue in Michigan: Auto No-Fault (ANF) insurance reform. The 1973 Michigan ANF law guaranteed lifelong medical and rehabilitative care after catastrophic auto accidents. Efforts to change the law arose from legislators, the insurance industry and public concern about cost. Despite strong opposition by advocacy and professional groups due to dire consequences for stakeholders, the governor signed Public Acts 21 and 22 of 2019 into law. Certain impactful financial components of the law were to begin on July 1, 2021.

When the lack of case manager awareness became apparent, CMSA Detroit acted (1) to assure the education of case managers on consequences of the law to the profession and stakeholders and (2) to educate and advocate with legislators for legislative change to prevent serious consequences for catastrophic injury survivors, case managers and health care providers. Congratulations, CMSA Detroit!

WINNER OF THE 2022 AWARD OF EXCELLENCE FOR CHAPTER REVITALIZATION: HOUSTON/GULF COAST CHAPTER OF THE CMSA

July 21, 2022

The Chapter Revitalization Award, also known as The Phoenix, is awarded to the chapter that has accomplished the most significant turnaround, from decline to new life. Prior to the revitalization of Houston/Gulf Coast, membership had declined, board members had resigned, no education was being offered, conferences had to be cancelled, and there was no vendor participation.

Now, membership has doubled and they are growing and recruiting. They now have a sustainable board with members who have knowledge of technology. Marketing materials have been amplified with QR codes to take non-members directly to their website to join. Consistent monthly educational events with sponsorship by vendors have been implemented to provide benefits to members at the local level. Congratulations, CMSA Greater Houston-Gulf Coast Chapter!

CMSA TRANSITION OF LEADERSHIP

June 19, 2022

During the #CMSA2022 Annual Conference, the leadership of the organization officially transitioned during a gavel exchange ceremony from outgoing President Melanie Prince to incoming President Dr. Colleen Morley.

Immediate Past President Melanie Prince has spent her two years as president advancing both CMSA and the professional practice of case management by strengthening the foundation of the organization with great focus on the 3-C platform she originally ran on for president – community, connectedness and collaborations.

  • A stronger sense of community among chapters as regional formats are embraced, and the new Fellows, who will lead case management into the next decades.
  • Re-connecting with the wisdom and leadership of CMSA past presidents via the Legacy Leaders Council, connecting programs to meet the practical needs of case managers, such as the new CMSA Boot Camp program, and connecting chapter leadership with monthly coffee connects.
  • Establishing formal collaborations with partners and other professional organizations who embrace CMSA’s mission.

CMSA President Dr. Colleen Morley has set the theme for her presidency as "disruptive innovation" for both profession and association. Her focus will be on advocacy, whether advocating for the patient, client, family, or for the profession of case management through impactful storytelling, outreach, and new ideas.

  • The impact of case management interventions that lead to better health outcomes.
  • Case managers recognized and included as a critical member of the interprofessional, transdisciplinary team.
  • Awareness of the public on the value of a case manager and how to connect when needed.

Dr. Morley will serve as CMSA President through 2024. Check back here monthly to view the progress made and resulting growth of your professional organization as CMSA begins to execute a new strategic plan.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in person in Orlando, and to those who tuned in virtually! It was wonderful to be together again, and we look forward to what’s to come. We are stronger together!

THE NURSING CRISIS - A PLEA FOR THE PROFESSION

March 17, 2022

By Pat Stricker, RN, MEd, Former Senior Vice President, TCS Healthcare Technologies

The COVID-19 pandemic caused numerous challenges for healthcare workers: chaos in work processes and procedures; lowered staff morale; increased, unrealistic workloads; long hours and increased weekly work hours; a feeling of a lack of respect and autonomy, and the feeling of despair in not being able to do enough to “save” their patients. The overwhelming loss of life was devastating and adding all these events together led to staff burnout and employees deciding they needed to leave their jobs.

Let’s take a look at some of the alarming statistics related to nurses and other healthcare workers leaving their positions...

SPECIAL CMSA ANNUAL PRE-CONFERENCE SESSION: JUNE 1, 2022

March 17, 2022

As you make your plans to join us June 1-4 for the 2022 CMSA Annual Conference and Expo in Orlando, Florida, add on a very special Pre-Conference Session: CM Boot Camp.

Case management is a growing health care profession, with a presence in every health delivery setting. Professionals moving to case management positions may or may not have access to adequate orientation and training. They often "learn on the job" and are not exposed to knowledge and skills that advance the practice of case management.

CMSA is filling this gap with a CM Boot Camp offering for case managers looking to build their skills and experience. If you have been a case manager for five years or less, are looking to change your area of practice, or advance your professional growth, this course is for you!

CM Boot Camp is NOT hours of PowerPoint slides and lectures, but interactive exercises, activities and case studies that will provide real-life scenarios and practical application. You will leave this course prepared to take on new challenges with full confidence.

This course is not included in the general conference registration; additional registration and fee are required. Find out more and register at cmsa.societyconference.com.

ACPA ANNOUNCES COLLABORATION WITH CMSA AND OPEN REGISTRATION FOR NPAC 2021

September 20, 2021 - The American College of Physician Advisors (ACPA) has been in existence for seven years, but 2021 marks the first year of collaboration with the Case Management Society of America (CMSA). Formed in 2014, the ACPA is the only non-profit, physician-led organization supporting physician advisors, case management leaders and other hospital and health system directors across the country.

Over the past number of years, the ACPA has produced and hosted educational presentations in live and virtual formats, published articles, presented advisory papers and offered regulatory reviews for the benefit of many different roles involved in hospital case management. Physician advisors go by many different titles, but key to much of the role’s focus and success involves a dynamic and closely cultivated relationship with our case/utilization management teams.

From concepts integral to optimizing transitions of care, to process improvement involving discharge planning, to identifying opportunities within the scope of appropriate utilization of hospital services, physician advisors depend on the insight provided by nurses and social workers involved in case management. Like them, physician advisors know there are endless projects to tackle and opportunities to uncover. Lessons learned along the way can help countless others in their own health systems and with this intent, ACPA looks forward to participating in future joint efforts with CMSA!

This October 18 – 20, ACPA is hosting their annual National Physician Advisor Conference (NPAC). “Multifaceted: Advising in An Unconventional World” will equip new and existing physician advisors, leaders in case management and clinical documentation integrity, revenue cycle professionals, c-suite leaders and others with novel approaches to navigate their unique healthcare systems during unprecedented times. Scheduled speakers include outstanding thought leaders and nationally recognized authorities involved in regulatory affairs and medical necessity screening procedures, including Dr. Mary McLaughlin-Davis, Senior Director of Care Management at Cleveland Clinic, Vice-Chair of the ACPA Advisory Board, and National CMSA president from 2016 – 2018.

Participants can earn up to 26 Commission for Case Manager Certification (CCMC) hours or AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ hours while networking virtually with other leaders in the field through one-on-one meet-ups or interactive sessions such as Regional Networking Lunches via a state-of-the-art interactive platform. The event will include topic-based tracks including COVID-19, Pediatrics, and Professional Leadership; a mixture of 30-minute “Quick Hit” sessions and 60-minute plenaries with live chat Q&A with the speakers; and specialized, live presentations including an Observation Case Discussion Panel, a Jeopardy-style session, and an expert panel moderated by the incomparable Dr. Ronald Hirsch.

Registration for NPAC 2021 – “Multifaceted: Advising in An Unconventional World” is now open.  For more information about the conference or ACPA, visit www.ACPAdvisors.org.
