SUMMARY:CMSA National (1CE) - Collaboration in Action: Winning Strategies for CM & UM Teams
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE!\n  \nJoin us for the upcoming webinar Collaboration in Action: Winning Strategies for CM & UM Teams.\n1 CE - RN\, CCM\, CDMS\, CNLCP \nEffective utilization management is a cornerstone of modern healthcare\, serving as a key strategy to balance high-quality patient care with the imperative to control rising costs. By systematically evaluating the medical necessity\, appropriateness\, and efficiency of care\, utilization management ensures that patients receive the right care\, at the right time\, in the right place. When leadership implements this tool effectively\, these practices improve care coordination\, reduce unnecessary services\, and promote evidence-based treatment pathways. The result can be a healthcare delivery system that supports better clinical outcomes\, enhances patient satisfaction\, and reduces avoidable expenditures. Utilization Management is a function of case management practice that serves not only as a cost-containment tool but also as a driver of improved patient-centered care\, providing a model for transitions of care within the healthcare system. \nObjectives:\n1. Differentiate between case management and utilization management roles.\n2. Identify key effective leadership tools to improve the utilization management processes.\n3. Demonstrate the latest utilization management knowledge and strategies. \nPresenters:\n- Dr. Ronald Hirsch\, MD\, FACP\, CHCQM\, Vice President of the Regulations and Education Group\, R1 RCM\, Inc\n- Jenny Quigley-Stickney\, MSN\, MHA\, MA\, RN\, CCM\, ACM-RN\, CPHM\, FCM\, Trauma Case Manager\, Cape Cod Healthcare\n- June Stark\, RN\, BSN\, MEd\, Case Management Consultant; and Adjunct Faculty \n

DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE\n  \nHosted by Hudson Valley CMSA \nObjectives: \n\nReview circumcision’s roots in American medicine from 19th century Victorian times to the present\, and the procedure’s ongoing promotion despite it being considered “non-therapeutic” by U.S. and international medical organizations.\nDescribe long term psychological and sexual consequences of amputating the male foreskin\, including personal accounts from men and their female partners.\nDiscuss the ethical dilemmas that confront medical and nursing professionals asked to participate in non-therapeutic genital surgeries to which the patient cannot consent.\n\nSpeaker: Georganne Chapin served for 25 years as CEO of Hudson Health Plan\, a nonprofit Medicaid managed care insurer in New York’s Hudson Valley; founded the Hudson Center for Health Equity and Quality—a tech company she still leads—and in 2008\, co-founded Intact America\, an organization dedicated to ending the unethical genital cutting of all children. In 2024\, she published This Penis Business: A Social Activist’s Memoir\, winning a Book Excellence Award in the health category. In the book\, Chapin describes her unusual upbringing and early awareness of circumcision due to a serious complication suffered by her younger brother. Chapin holds a BA in anthropology from Barnard College\, an MA in sociomedical sciences from Columbia University\, and a JD from Pace University School of Law. She also has taught Bioethics at Pace law school and Dominican College School of Nursing.

SUMMARY:CMSA National (1 CE) - Everyday Empowerment: Community Coaching for Successful Transitions
DESCRIPTION:Register here!\n  \nJoin us for a presentation on Everyday Empowerment: Community Coaching for Successful Transitions.\n1 hr RN and CCM\n \nAs the pace of population aging accelerates\, the nursing home sector faces an access to care crisis. Limited admissions and downsizing have left many older adults without the necessary care and placement\, while current residents risk displacement (American Health Care Association\, 2023). This issue is compounded by the increasing demand for long-term care services. One solution is the federal Money Follows the Person (MFP) program\, which helps states rebalance their long-term care systems by transitioning individuals with long-term illnesses or disabilities from institutions back into the community. Successful and sustained transitions depend on factors such as planning\, coordination\, housing availability\, and access to home and community-based services (Colello\, 2021). However\, a significant gap identified is the lack of resources for integrating into everyday community life. Individuals often struggle with daily tasks previously managed in institutional settings\, such as getting a haircut\, finding a church\, or mailing a letter. The Community Coaching service line pilot program seeks to bridge this gap. The Community Coach is a role designed to augment services delivered by home and community-based case managers. Together\, the Community Coach and client choose needed content through the use of a topical menu and road map for a successful transition. This program focuses on enhancing life skills and fostering community connections\, which are crucial for successful reintegration. \nThis presentation will detail the need for community support\, the design of the service line\, and the pilot’s implementation. Preliminary results indicate that participants in the Community Coaching program experience smoother transitions and higher satisfaction levels. By addressing these gaps\, the program not only improves individual outcomes but also offers insights into how similar initiatives can be scaled and implemented nationwide. The long-term benefits of such support systems could lead to more sustainable and person-centered care models\, ultimately influencing future policy and practice in both the long-term care sector and community-based case management. \nObjectives: \n\nSummarize the current challenges faced by the nursing home sector due to the rapid pace of population aging\, including limited admissions\, downsizing\, and the resulting displacement risks for older adults.\nDescribe the goals\, mechanisms\, and successes of the MFP program in transitioning individuals from institutional settings to community living\, emphasizing the importance of planning\, coordination\, and access to home and community-based services.\nDevelop a similar Community Coaching program by leveraging the design\, implementation strategies\, and preliminary outcomes of the pilot program\, enabling other organizations to address gaps in community integration and enhance successful transitions for individuals moving from institutional care to community living.\n\nPresenters: \n\nSarah Cukale-Matos\, DNP\, RN\nKarissa Maddox\, MSN\, RN-BSN\, CMC

SUMMARY:CMSA National (1 CE) – From Nursing to Case Management: Adapting a Proven Scale to Understand and Improve the Case Manager Experience
DESCRIPTION:Register here!\n  \nJoin us for a presentation on From Nursing to Case Management: Adapting a Proven Scale to Understand and Improve the Case Manager Experience.\n1 hr RN and CCM\n \nThe Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI) has been widely used for more than two decades to study the nursing work environment. Professional case managers specialize in care coordination to meet the clinical and financial goals of medically and socially complex patient populations across the continuum of care. Despite its importance\, there is limited research on the case management practice environment\, underscoring the need for a valid and reliable instrument to assess this concept. This study aims to adapt the PES-NWI to the context of hospital case management. Following expert panel feedback\, the instrument was adapted for use in hospital case management (Practice Environment Scale for Hospital Case Management). A convenience sample was recruited via social media and professional networks\, yielding 160 hospital case managers working across the United States. Psychometric evaluation of the adapted instrument included assessments of validity (content validity via expert panel review\, known-groups validity\, and factor analysis) and reliability (Cronbach’s alpha and item-total correlations). Hospital case management participants worked across 34 states and were mostly female (92%) from the disciplines of nursing (79%) and social work (21%). Nearly 60% of respondents held a national case management certification\, and 40% had worked in case management for over 10 years. Factor analysis yielded a four-factor solution with clean item loadings: Supportive and Participatory Leadership\, Staffing and Resource Adequacy\, Opportunities for Professional Development\, and Fostering Teamwork and Collaboration. The factor structure differs from the original instrument; however\, psychometric testing demonstrates strong reliability (overall Cronbach’s alpha of 0.93; item-to-total correlations from 0.37 to 0.80) and validity. The Practice Environment Scale for Hospital Case Management is the first instrument to assess case managers’ practice environments in the hospital setting\, which provides a foundation for future research. Understanding the practice environment is important for workforce development\, enhancing professional satisfaction\, and maximizing the impact of case management across acute care settings. \nObjectives: \n\nExplain the importance of the practice environment for workforce and professional development of case managers.\nDescribe the validity and reliability of the adapted instrument to measure practice environment for case managers.\nSummarize how the adapted instrument can be used in future research related to the workforce and professional development of case managers.\n\nPresenters: \n\nKristen Berryman\, MSN\, RN\, CCM

SUMMARY:SE Coalition hosted by CMSA Atlanta (1 CE): The Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare: Integrating Case Management\, Utilization Review\, and Human Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Information & Registration Here \nThe CMSA SE Education Coalition cordially invites you to join us at the January 2026 Educational Webinar: \nThe Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare: Integrating Case Management\, Utilization Review\, and Human Collaboration\nNetworking 6:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. ET - Presentation 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. ET\n \nArtificial intelligence (AI) offers significant potential to enhance efficiency\, accuracy\, and personalization across healthcare\, particularly within case management (CM) and utilization review (UR). However\, realizing these benefits requires a strong ethical foundation that ensures AI supports healthcare professionals. Ethical AI integration depends on core principles such as transparency\, fairness\, accountability\, and equity. This includes using representative\, bias-mitigated datasets; ensuring algorithmic explainability; protecting patient privacy\, consent\, and autonomy; and establishing robust oversight and regulatory structures. \nWithin human-in-the-loop models\, clinicians and case managers can leverage AI for tasks such as data processing\, chart review\, predictive modeling\, and denial management while maintaining ultimate authority and clinical judgment. Thoughtfully designed AI systems can identify care gaps\, support targeted interventions\, and advance equitable care; without proper safeguards\, they risk reinforcing disparities or undermining person-centered values. As AI continues to evolve\, interdisciplinary collaboration\, continuous monitoring\, and adaptive ethical frameworks remain essential for responsible adoption. \nAttendees will leave this session with a clear understanding of the ethical considerations necessary for safe and effective AI use in CM and UR; the role of human oversight in maintaining clinical integrity; and practical strategies to mitigate bias\, protect patient rights\, and ensure algorithms support equitable\, person-centered care. They will also gain insight into real-world applications where AI augments workflows without sacrificing professional accountability or patient trust. \nLearning Objectives\nLearners should be able to:\n1. Describe the ethical principles relevant to AI deployment in case management and utilization review.\n2. Explain the role of “human-in-the-loop” and human collaboration in ethically integrating AI into CM and UR workflows.\n3. Recognize the potential risks and equity concerns associated with AI use in healthcare and propose strategies to mitigate them.  \nSpeakers:\nDr. Heaven Provo\, MBA\, DNP\, RN\, CCM\, PHNA-BC\, NE-BC\, LNFA\, CAHIMS\, FCM\nBen Parkison\, MBA\, MS Eng \nCost:\nCMSA Members: Free\nNon-Members: $25.00 \nTo become a member of CMSA\, visit https://cmsa.org/membership

SUMMARY:CMSA National (1 CE) - Managing Emotional Dynamics: Transference and Countertransference in Case Management
DESCRIPTION:Registration & Information Here \nManaging Emotional Dynamics: Transference and Countertransference in Case Management\nThis interactive training explores the often-unseen emotional dynamics that influence relationships between patients\, families\, and case managers. Focusing on transference—patients’ unconscious feelings\, expectations\, or past experiences projected onto providers—and countertransference—the emotional responses these interactions may evoke in clinicians—participants will gain insight into how emotions can shape communication\, decision-making\, and care outcomes. The webinar emphasizes practical awareness-building\, helping case managers recognize emotional cues early\, respond intentionally\, and avoid common pitfalls that can lead to boundary challenges or burnout. Through realistic healthcare scenarios\, reflection\, and actionable strategies\, participants will strengthen their ability to manage complex emotions\, foster trust\, and support effective collaboration while maintaining professionalism and compassion in everyday case management practice. \nObjectives:\n1. Define transference and countertransference in the context of patient and family interactions.\n2. Identify common signs of transference and countertransference in clinical encounters.\n3. Apply strategies to manage personal reactions\, maintain professional boundaries\, and promote effective patient advocacy. \nPresenter:\nDr. Geovanni Vazquez\, Ph.D.\, LCSW\, LMHC\, LADC-I\, CCM \n1CE - RN\, CCM\, & SW \nCost:\n$0 Members | $40 Non-Members \n  \n
