FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Case Management Society of America (CMSA) Releases New Addendum to the CMSA Standards of Practice for Case Management (2022): Standard Q - Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) and Health Equity
Brentwood, TN – October 16, 2024 – The Case Management Society of America (CMSA), the leading non-profit association dedicated to the support and development of the profession of case management, is proud to announce the release of Standard Q: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) and Health Equity as an official addendum to the CMSA Standards of Practice for Case Management (2022).
Standard Q addresses the growing need for culturally competent, inclusive, and equitable care in today’s healthcare landscape. This new standard provides case managers with essential guidelines and a comprehensive framework to reduce systemic barriers, promote equitable and client-centered care, and ensure that all clients and their families, regardless of their backgrounds or identities, receive the optimal access to, experience of, and outcomes from the highest quality healthcare.
In addition, the standard highlights the importance of these values for the workforce itself. There is emphasis on understanding the diverse identities of each professional case manager, while encouraging continuous learning about DEIB and health equity that empowers case manager to advance their cultural responsiveness within their interprofessional teams, across and within the workforce, as well as with other strategic partners.
CMSA recognizes that the demographics of our society are rapidly changing, and there is an urgent call for professionals who can provide culturally competent and unbiased care to all populations. Standard Q aims to equip case managers with the tools they need to navigate these challenges effectively while advocating for positive systemic changes in healthcare delivery.
"At CMSA, we believe that Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) are essential components of professional case management. Standard Q serves as a vital resource for case managers, empowering them to make an impact by dismantling barriers to healthcare access and advancing health equity across all communities," said CMSA President Janet Coulter, MSN, MS, RN, CCM, FCM.
Standard Q ensures that case managers are prepared to address health disparities and social determinants of health, helping to eliminate unequal health outcomes. By integrating DEIB principles, case managers can deliver more inclusive services, respect clients' unique preferences and identities, and promote better client engagement and trust.
Michael Garrett, MS, CCM, CVE, Chair of CMSA’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Core Committee, emphasized, "Standard Q reflects CMSA’s commitment to advancing the professional practice of case management and ensuring that all clients receive the care they deserve. This standard is an essential tool to help case managers contribute to health equity and lead the way in addressing health disparities within the healthcare system."
Ellen Fink-Samnick, DBH, MSW, LCSW, ACSW, CCM, CCTP, CRP, FCM, Vice-Chair of the DEIB Core Committee, added, "As case managers, we are uniquely positioned to advocate for all clients and their families. Standard Q provides the framework for us to foster a needed culture of inclusion, belonging, and respect that starts with the workforce itself, and transcends all individuals. These actions will collectively promote the ability of professional case managers to close the health equity gap in our communities.”
CMSA encourages case managers to incorporate Standard Q into their daily practice to strengthen their cultural competence, advocate for systemic change, and lead the way in reducing health disparities. Standard Q provides a pathway for professional case managers to become advocates for health equity and champions for DEIB principles within the profession and the broader healthcare ecosystem.
CMSA will offer educational resources and webinars to support the integration of Standard Q into case management practice. Case managers will have the opportunity to engage in continuing education and professional development to strengthen their understanding and application of DEIB principles.
The CMSA Standards of Practice for Case Management is the foundational resource for case managers across diverse practice settings. These standards guide the delivery of quality, client-centered care, professional ethics, and a commitment to continuous improvement in the case management profession. The addition of Standard Q marks a significant evolution in the standards to reflect the growing need for equitable and inclusive care in the U.S. healthcare system.
