Upon completion of this presentation participants will be able to:
- Describe the indications and common spinal procedures performed using endoscopic spine surgery techniques across the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions.
- Explain the clinical benefits of endoscopic spine surgery, including reduced surgical site infections, decreased morbidity, and preservation of posterior spinal structures.
- Identify potential complications associated with endoscopic spine surgery and discuss strategies to minimize risk, including considerations related to the learning curve.
- Compare endoscopic spine surgery with traditional open and minimally invasive techniques in terms of patient outcomes, recovery time, and resource utilization.
- Evaluate the operational and financial considerations of implementing an endoscopic spine surgery program, including capital investment, efficiency, and overall value to patients and healthcare systems.
SPEAKER BIO:
Dr. Matthew Wilkening is an adult and pediatric orthopedic spine specialist who performs cervical, lumbar & thoracic spine surgery. He is interested in helping patients to find both surgical and nonsurgical solutions for all conditions affecting the neck and back. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, and served as a pilot in the US Navy. He went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine and completed residency at Michigan State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he was named intern of the year. Dr. Wilkening completed the Spinal Reconstructive Surgery fellowship at Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, MD. He has presented research in spinal deformity, trauma, minimally invasive techniques, and oncology in a variety of national and international forums.
