Information & Registration Here

The CMSA SE Education Coalition cordially invites you to join us at the January 2026 Educational Webinar:

The Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare: Integrating Case Management, Utilization Review, and Human Collaboration
Networking 6:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. ET - Presentation 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. ET

Artificial intelligence (AI) offers significant potential to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and personalization across healthcare, particularly within case management (CM) and utilization review (UR). However, realizing these benefits requires a strong ethical foundation that ensures AI supports healthcare professionals. Ethical AI integration depends on core principles such as transparency, fairness, accountability, and equity. This includes using representative, bias-mitigated datasets; ensuring algorithmic explainability; protecting patient privacy, consent, and autonomy; and establishing robust oversight and regulatory structures.

Within human-in-the-loop models, clinicians and case managers can leverage AI for tasks such as data processing, chart review, predictive modeling, and denial management while maintaining ultimate authority and clinical judgment. Thoughtfully designed AI systems can identify care gaps, support targeted interventions, and advance equitable care; without proper safeguards, they risk reinforcing disparities or undermining person-centered values. As AI continues to evolve, interdisciplinary collaboration, continuous monitoring, and adaptive ethical frameworks remain essential for responsible adoption.

Attendees will leave this session with a clear understanding of the ethical considerations necessary for safe and effective AI use in CM and UR; the role of human oversight in maintaining clinical integrity; and practical strategies to mitigate bias, protect patient rights, and ensure algorithms support equitable, person-centered care. They will also gain insight into real-world applications where AI augments workflows without sacrificing professional accountability or patient trust.

Learning Objectives
Learners should be able to:
1. Describe the ethical principles relevant to AI deployment in case management and utilization review.
2. Explain the role of “human-in-the-loop” and human collaboration in ethically integrating AI into CM and UR workflows.
3. Recognize the potential risks and equity concerns associated with AI use in healthcare and propose strategies to mitigate them.
