ABSTRACT:

Mental health challenges and suicide risk are increasingly affecting workplaces and communities, yet many people feel unprepared to respond when someone is struggling. This webinar provides practical guidance on how to recognize warning signs, have supportive conversations, and respond appropriately when someone may be experiencing suicidal thoughts. Participants will learn how to approach difficult conversations with empathy, assess urgency, and connect individuals with appropriate resources while maintaining their own safety and boundaries.

SPEAKER BIO:

Sandy Avina is the Claims Services Manager for California Schools Risk Management (CSRM) and a certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor. Through her work, she has seen firsthand how stress, trauma, and life challenges can impact individuals and their ability to recover from an injury. Sandy is passionate about helping people feel more confident, recognizing when someone may be struggling and knowing how to respond with empathy and support. As a Mental Health First Aid trainer, she teaches practical skills for identifying warning signs of mental health challenges, responding to individuals in distress, and connecting them with appropriate resources.

Her training focuses on building awareness, reducing stigma, and empowering participants to take meaningful action when someone may be at risk.
