CMSA National (1CE) – Collaboration in Action: Winning Strategies for CM & UM Teams

Virtual Event

REGISTER HERE!   Join us for the upcoming webinar Collaboration in Action: Winning Strategies for CM & UM Teams. 1 CE - RN, CCM, CDMS, CNLCP Effective utilization management is a cornerstone of modern healthcare, serving as a key strategy to balance high-quality patient care with the imperative to control rising costs. By systematically evaluating the medical necessity, appropriateness, and efficiency of care, utilization management ensures that patients receive the right care, at the right time, in the right place. When leadership implements this tool effectively, these practices improve care coordination, reduce unnecessary services, and promote evidence-based treatment pathways. The result can be a healthcare delivery system that supports better clinical outcomes, enhances patient satisfaction, and reduces avoidable expenditures. Utilization Management is a function of case management practice that serves not only as a cost-containment tool but also as a driver of improved patient-centered care, providing a model for transitions of care within the healthcare system. Objectives: 1. Differentiate between case management and utilization management roles. 2. Identify key effective leadership tools to improve the utilization management processes. 3. Demonstrate the latest utilization management knowledge and strategies. Presenters: - Dr. Ronald Hirsch, MD, FACP, CHCQM, Vice President of the Regulations and Education […]

CMSA National (1 CE) – Everyday Empowerment: Community Coaching for Successful Transitions

Virtual Event

Register here!   Join us for a presentation on Everyday Empowerment: Community Coaching for Successful Transitions. 1 hr RN and CCM As the pace of population aging accelerates, the nursing home sector faces an access to care crisis. Limited admissions and downsizing have left many older adults without the necessary care and placement, while current residents risk displacement (American Health Care Association, 2023). This issue is compounded by the increasing demand for long-term care services. One solution is the federal Money Follows the Person (MFP) program, which helps states rebalance their long-term care systems by transitioning individuals with long-term illnesses or disabilities from institutions back into the community. Successful and sustained transitions depend on factors such as planning, coordination, housing availability, and access to home and community-based services (Colello, 2021). However, a significant gap identified is the lack of resources for integrating into everyday community life. Individuals often struggle with daily tasks previously managed in institutional settings, such as getting a haircut, finding a church, or mailing a letter. The Community Coaching service line pilot program seeks to bridge this gap. The Community Coach is a role designed to augment services delivered by home and community-based case managers. Together, the Community […]

CMSA National (1 CE) – From Nursing to Case Management: Adapting a Proven Scale to Understand and Improve the Case Manager Experience

Virtual Event

Register here!   Join us for a presentation on From Nursing to Case Management: Adapting a Proven Scale to Understand and Improve the Case Manager Experience. 1 hr RN and CCM The Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI) has been widely used for more than two decades to study the nursing work environment. Professional case managers specialize in care coordination to meet the clinical and financial goals of medically and socially complex patient populations across the continuum of care. Despite its importance, there is limited research on the case management practice environment, underscoring the need for a valid and reliable instrument to assess this concept. This study aims to adapt the PES-NWI to the context of hospital case management. Following expert panel feedback, the instrument was adapted for use in hospital case management (Practice Environment Scale for Hospital Case Management). A convenience sample was recruited via social media and professional networks, yielding 160 hospital case managers working across the United States. Psychometric evaluation of the adapted instrument included assessments of validity (content validity via expert panel review, known-groups validity, and factor analysis) and reliability (Cronbach’s alpha and item-total correlations). Hospital case management participants worked across 34 states […]

SE Coalition hosted by CMSA Atlanta (1 CE): The Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare: Integrating Case Management, Utilization Review, and Human Collaboration

Information & Registration Here The CMSA SE Education Coalition cordially invites you to join us at the January 2026 Educational Webinar: The Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare: Integrating Case Management, Utilization Review, and Human Collaboration Networking 6:00 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. ET - Presentation 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. ET Artificial intelligence (AI) offers significant potential to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and personalization across healthcare, particularly within case management (CM) and utilization review (UR). However, realizing these benefits requires a strong ethical foundation that ensures AI supports healthcare professionals. Ethical AI integration depends on core principles such as transparency, fairness, accountability, and equity. This includes using representative, bias-mitigated datasets; ensuring algorithmic explainability; protecting patient privacy, consent, and autonomy; and establishing robust oversight and regulatory structures. Within human-in-the-loop models, clinicians and case managers can leverage AI for tasks such as data processing, chart review, predictive modeling, and denial management while maintaining ultimate authority and clinical judgment. Thoughtfully designed AI systems can identify care gaps, support targeted interventions, and advance equitable care; without proper safeguards, they risk reinforcing disparities or undermining person-centered values. As AI continues to evolve, interdisciplinary collaboration, continuous monitoring, and adaptive ethical frameworks remain essential for responsible adoption. Attendees will leave this session with a clear understanding of the ethical considerations necessary for safe and effective AI use in CM and […]
